History of EM in India
To know how far we have come and how far we have left to go, we must first understand where we have come from. It was through the persistent and dedicated efforts of academicians in India and the United States of America that Government Recognized MD and DNB pathways to Emergency Medicine Training were established. INDUSEM accomplished this mission.
2005
- INDUSEM was born as an Intercontinental Institutional Partnership, focused on advanced patient centric initiatives in Education, Research, and Care.
- The first INDUSEM summit was held at AIIMS, New Delhi.
- 2006 - ACET (Academic Council for Emergency Traumatology) was founded, with a focus on developing academic models for Emergency and Trauma Care.
- 2007 – INDUSEM began to engage in academic activities with the Center for Disease Control & Prevention and Indian Council of Medical Research.
- 2007 – Translational Research in Emergencies, Trauma, and Shock, launched in India. ICMR created a new section for the same.
- 2008 – JETS (The Journal of Emergencies, Trauma, and Shock) was inaugurated.
Landmark White Paper Publication, “Developing Academic Emergency Medicine in India” (2008) which outlined the benchmarks for developing academic training programs for EM in India.
2010
- ACEE (Academic College of Emergency Experts) in India was founded to build a guild of quality Emergency Physician leaders.
- INDUSEM joined OPUS12.
- 2011 – ACEN (Academy for Clinical Emergency Nursing) in India was founded to build a guild of quality Emergency Nursing leaders.
- 2011 – AIIMS AUTLS (Advanced Ultrasound in Trauma and Life Support) Course was created.
2012
- EMCORD-INDIA (Emergency Medicine Council for Residency Departments in India) was launched, bringing together all the MCI-Recognized Emergency Medicine Residency Programs.
- 2013 – NBE approved postgraduate training programs in EM
- 2013 – ACEE launched the Emergency Pediatrics Initiative.
- 2014 – Jeevan Jyoti Rashtriya Abhiyan and Jan Suraksha Abhiyan launched as initiatives to life support education and injury prevention awareness.
- 2014 – INDUSEM joined hands with IIM-Lucknow (the Indian Institute of Management) to develop management initiatives in health administration

2015
- INDUSEM Postal stamped Philatelic Cover was released by the Government of India Commemorating 10 Years of the INDUSEM Mission.
- EMA India (Emergency Medicine Association of India) was launched.
- INDUSEM joined hands with WHO to advance Emergency Medicine and Road Safety Agenda in Asia
- NEMBRIC (National Emergency Medicine Board Review of India Course) incorporated by the NBE.
2016
- INDUSEM spearheaded the founding of WACEM (the World Academic Council for Emergency Medicine)
- The first WACEM Congress was held at St.John’s Academy of Health Sciences in Bengaluru, India
- INDUSEM-OPUS12 ink a Global PubMed Indexed Journal Multi-Grants Operating Agreement under “Alliance for Science” Program.
- INDUSEM partnered with NABH (the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Healthcare providers) to bring the Emerald Quality Certification Program for EDs in India
- 2017 - ACEE-EMA INDIA launched the EMINDIA National Conference for Emergency Medicine.
2018
- INDUSEM restructured as the ACEE-INDIA Initiative.
- State Chapters of EMA India launched.
- INDUSEM facilitated the formation of the Organized Guild of Academic Medicine in India with all professional clinical medical and surgical societies/associations in India.
2019
- INDUSEM headquarter at AIIMS Emergency Medicine gets designated as the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Emergency and Trauma (WHO-CCET)
- Vigyan Central inaugurated as India’s Thesis eLibrary and Research Library.
- EMCARD (INDUSEM-Emergency Cardiology Summit) was inaugurated by EMA Goa.
- INDUSEM Ultrasound Courses by the International Council for Critical Emergency Sonography (ICCES) held across the world, including USA.
- SATVIK certification launched by INDUSEM to ensure pure vegetarian, alcohol-free, green conferences.
The world changed, INDUSEM transformed.
2020
- WHO recognized INDUSEM as the Best Practice Model for developing EM in India.
- All conferences (EMINDIA2020, EPICON2020, EMPART went virtual)
- Multiple Landmark Guidelines and Papers were published in PubMed by INDUSEM and WACEM leaders.
- EMGURUKUL was launched.
- WHO-CCET Partnership held COVIPOCUS and COVISIM Virtual Congresses.
- Guidelines and Papers continue to be developed and published.
- INDUSEM leaders won laurels at ACEP awards 2020, and at the All-American International Medicine Congress 2021.
2022
- ASHWAMEGH Faculty Development Program was launched in partnership with WHO-CCET and AIIMS Nagpur.
- INDUSEM launched the Raksha Bandhan, Suraksha Bandhan Initiative across India to celebrate the bond between Emergency Care Providers and their patients.
2023
- EMCORD Grand Rounds (live web-based grand rounds every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) launched.
- EMA NorthEast launched PEP Talk weekend webinars on Pediatric Emergencies.
- EM Bharat Divas celebrated across medical colleges in India.
- INDUSEM Skills Mela launched as a hybrid training initiative for teaching the One Resuscitation Model.
- Prof. Dr. Praveen Aggarwal National CME launched at EMINDIA23
2024
- EMINDIA2024 was held at AIIMS BHOPAL in August 2024.
- INDUSEM Leaders participated in World Safety Congress 2024 in New Delhi.
- The 10th World Academic Congress of Emergency Medicine was held in Rome, Italy from 6th to 9th November 2024.
- INDIA won the Bid to host WACEM2025 in Mangaluru, India.
- Dr. Vimal Krishnan Pillai was elected to be the Next Secretary general of WACEM.
